MACH 11 questions
Posted in 2009
A user running IDS 11.50 MACH 11 asked (1) whether an SDS node can be attached to an HDR or RSS secondary, to avoid buying separate disk sets at a DR site, and (2) whether the old primary can be reinstated after a failover without a backup/restore. Answers: SDS nodes can only run against the primary, but you can pre-configure SDS ONCONFIG files at the DR site and start those SDS nodes once the HDR/RSS server is promoted to primary. For reinstatement, bring the old primary back as an HDR secondary and then fail over to make it primary again.

Hi, Greatly appreciated if someone can be of assistance in a couple of questions I was recently asked on MACH 11 running IDS 11.50. 1) is it possible to have an SDS node against an HDR or RSS node? The reason this is being requested is to have a physical DR site consisting of an HDR or RSS node duplicate the local site of Primary and SDS. This way each site will only have one set of expensive disks as opposed to a DR site having an HDR + RSS, or multiple RSS nodes each requiring their own set of disks. 2) in case of Failure of local site of Primary and SDS, i.e. the disk drive is down but not corrupted, and FOC is set to DR site HDR or RSS node so now the DR site is automatically the primary, after the local site is back up and the disks have not been corrupted can the original primary on the local site be set back to primary if the logical logs on the DR site have not yet cycled through or would it always first require an (online) backup of the DR site and restore on the primary? Thank You, Zev Berezin

The reason No. SDS can currently only run against a primary. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com I will now proceed to pleasure myself with this fish. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

Zev, Can you draw me a picture? While the active SDS node must be using the same shared disk as the primary, there is nothing which says that the secondary node (HDR/RSS) = can not be using a different shared disk. And since the amount of time to start up a SDS node is fairly short, there is nothing which says that t= he HDR secondary could not become the primary of a SDS cluster upon failov= er by simply starting the SDS nodes as part of the failover.. Zev, You can't have a live SDS node attached to an HDR or RSS secondary, however, on the remote machine where the secondary is running, you can configure an SDS ONCONFIG file and if the primary fails, once the secondary is promoted to primary, you can then start up the SDS secondary to back it up.
