A lot depends on the nature of your transactions, engine level, etc. As a general rule, I feel that it's best to let the engine tell you how much space is really needed by examining the online message log. Basically the logical logs contain two records for every up, one record for every insert, one record for every delete and various other records for each of the indexes in the row. Also, it will contain records for tablespace extent allocations, transaction begins/ends, and undo records. If the database is using unbuffered logging, then more log space will be required because the logical log pages in the logical log buffer will be purged when any transaction terminates. As a VERY GENERAL RULE, you would need at least 20 times the number of bytes of all of the rows updated during your largest transaction. However, I really think that examination of the online message log file is a much better way to determine this. I generally recommend that customers be able to go 24 hours before a log wrap would occur. This should provide enough space so that you can handle the bigger "batch" jobs. Madison Pruet
