Also depends how you have written you applications and in what language. If they are 4GL applications runing on the same server as the database you should be able to use nothing but the access control mechanisms of the engine - username, password, connection and individual rights on each table/column. Using roles to do the last is often a good idea. If you are talking about client/server applications with clients on MS Windows there are many new problems. The best start is to look at the OpenLink ODBC/JDBC drivers for their solutions. If that isn't enough you may have to use only stored procedures for all database updates. That's very hard, and not something I would want to implement, but may be required in some cases.
