Upgrade Of Informix Databases

I am having a problem in trying to upgrade my informix 5.08 database from 8GIG to 12 GIG. I added a 4 gig drive and splitted it to 2 gigs logical volumes and increased the number of chunks from 4 to 6. The problem surfaced when i tried to do a backup and run tbcheck so i had to restore the old structure.
