Re: 7.2 talking to 8.2

Istar did go away in version 6 as a seperate product. Effectively it was
implemented into the engine as you said. The terminology is sometimes still
used however in reference to remote database connectivity.
The original posting refered to the ability to directly access an 8.2 table
from a stored procedure running in a 7.x engine.
The following is from a reply message that I sent directly to another
individual. Maybe it will explain better what I am saying in relation to
the original posting.
If you have two instances (I'll call them informix1 and informix2) they
might be on the same machine or two different machines it doesn't matter.
Normally (with 7.x) you can connect to informix1 and execute a statement as
follows:
select * from sysmaster@informix2:systables;
This might be referred to as a distributed or remote query.
Now, if either informix1 or informix2 (or both) are 8.x servers, the same
query will fail because distributed query capability (sometimes referred to
as istar) is not yet available with 8.x.
My original statement that this feature will be available in 8.3 is not
completely accurate. As luck would have it, I had the opportunity to meet
with the VP of development for datawarehousing products with Informix this
week. I asked him about this same topic. He indicated that istar will only
be partially implemented in 8.3 (which they are now calling Yellowstone) it
will be available around September of this year, it probably won't be fully
implemented until 8.4 (Independence), which they are targeting for spring of
2000.
Essentially what this means is that with 8.x you can only access data within
the same instance and you can't access 8.x data from an outside instance.
I hope this helps.
If I am inaccurate please correct me, but I know that I can't execute such a
query with my 8.21 instances.
