RE: IBM Targets Low-End Database Market

Once again IBM is using the wrong tool (IMHO). IDS would be a better fit or even Online 5.x. But what do I know I've only used the Informix technology on/off since 1986. Sorry - venting at lack of any real marketing. I know I should get over it - nothing will ever change but I still need to vent. Kindly disregard... Totally agreed. I don't know about others, but I actually get a feeling that Informix was better off before 24-Apr-2001. At least it had a distinct identity. Today it is just another of hundreds of IBM product and worse, a product which is not a preferred product to sell. In nutshell, IBM seems to be doing what even Oracle failed to do: kill informix completely.

Well, the DB2 product, and brand, have such a great reputation in the SME market that it clearly makes business sense. Obviously, if they were to try to penetrate the SME market with a product long associated in the public's mind as "mainframe", like Informix, they'd have no chance. But they've cleverly avoided that pitfall ....
