Alexanderia, Informix & Pyramid

We are using Alexanderia which is a backup/restore product from SpectraLogic with Informix 7.10. Ontape rewinds to the beginning of the tape after prompting the user for a restore. It does this by closing and re-opening the tape device. When the tape device is a named pipe from alexandria, the result is a broken pipe and the restore fails. (Ontape hangs on input from alexandria's named pipe). Has anyone else experienced this problem or developed a workaround.
