The whole point to the client/server Windows appeal has been REDUCED cost. INFORMIX must think the average site is a bunch of pilgrims standing at a medicine show. Learning a new operating environment in Visual BASIC and Visual C++ is going to take enough time--and then have to learn NewEra. Once I learn the Visual C++/BASIC, why would I need NewEra? Unless it's inexpensive I would be an absolute idiot to spend that kind of money, or even waste my time with it. You have to ask yourself why would INFORMIX glom onto VC++ in the first place. They have the resources to experiment with client/server, and must see the writing on the wall: UNIX is in big trouble with Windows NT and Windows 95. Go back to the egg, and reevaluate your long-term plans. By the time you ramp up to VC++, which is "only needed for compiled programs", you'll start to see Win 95. Are you honestly going to run client server apps as 'interpreted' programs? The hardware is getting less expensive too, so this may not be an issue. I'm a UNIX lover--I hope they have a windowing Korn shell for Windows soon--it's the only thing really missing. I'd sooner spend money on that!
