RE: A migration question
Posted in 2004
Malcolm If it's any help I have a similar problem instance, i.e. a shambles, and I've got to transfer to a n incompatible hardware platform and from 7.31 to 9.4. After weighing up all the options I concluded synonyms was the only way to go. ER was considered at one stage, however you can count the number on primary keys on the 300 plus tables on one hand !! I have used synonyms in the past to split a version 5 instance that ran out of chunks so I know they are stable and work well. My proposal is to create the new instance and create all tables as synonyms then in slow time replace each with the true table. The concept has been unofficially validated as a viable method by a mutual IBM acquaintance.
