I just noticed when I SELECT * FROM <table> that doesn't have any rows in it, it shows me all the column names before reporting No Rows Found. Is that normal? Before I finished my first cup of coffee, I had re-installed the engine and had forgotten to take it offline first. I sort of expected to have problems, but it appears to have handled it properly we're running on AIX 5.3 Should I shutdown informix and re-do the re-intall just to be safe?
First question: Yes, normal behavior.
Second question: No need to reinstall. It should be sufficient to just shutdown
the instance(s) and restart it(them?) if you have not already. The engine was
OK after the install because the oninit process was already fully loaded into
memory and swap. You are running on AIX which as a BSD UNIX variant loads
executables completely into swap at startup and pages code in from swap only.
The original executable file is never accessed again. You can verify that with
/etc/fuser $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit which will find no processes that have the
file open while the engine is running.
System V derivatives UNIXes like Solaris demand page from the original file
into
swap only pages that are actually accessed, which can cause crashes if you
overwrite the executable file and some page that was not previously needed is
accessed following the copy. On Solaris if you run /etc/fuser
$INFORMIXDIR/ebin/oninit you will see the pids of all of the running oninit's.
Anyway, lesson over, you're OK to go.
