Could one change chunk name by editing the appropriate reserved pages (primary and mirror chunk pages-- 8th, 9th, 10th, & 11th reserved pages, I believe). David Grove
According to a reply I received in response to a similar reply you can. So slip on your ten-gallon hat, sharpen those spurs and... "Yeehah!!!!" And please let me know how you get on. That would not be the best thing to do. It is possible as long as the new name is the same length as the old name. The chunk structure has a field for the length of the path name. David, You treading on some rather dangerous ground. One mistake and you'll be facing a full restore. Also, you could easily get into a situation where the attempt to do this would cause a future problem. If you encountered a problem in the future, having messed with the reserved pages could make it impossible to backup or restore the engine. Of course we have to store the chunk paths somewhere. That's common sense. And as you have found out, the two chunk pages and the mirror pages do contain path names. However, that's NOT the only place that chunk path names exist. For several levels, we have had the idea of 'extended' reserve pages. These reserve pages can exist anywhere in the root chunk. I have to admit that one of the last things that I did before I became an informix employee was to rename all of my chunks from 28 character names to 8 character names. I will not state wheither this was the reason that Informix was interested in hiring me, or wheither the attempt to do this was the reason that I was looking for a job. Also, I can not state how I did this. But I will state that there are countless things that have to be considered before this can work. I would encourage you to contact support on possible ways to meet your objectives. If you should mess up and corrupt your database, you might find yourself in a rather lonely position.
