Doesn't make sense for *any* distro to do that. _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live™: Keep your life in sync. http://windowslive.com/explore?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_allup_1a_explore_042009

Agreed. It just looks counterintuitive if not downright wrong. It seems to have been a recent thing. Current Debian & Ubuntu do it but I didn't have a problem changing it. I noticed from an earlier post that you use SuSE 10.x. ISTR that SuSE is now up to 11.x so maybe that would be similar. Centos' site points to RHEL docs and they simply say ensure that the loopback entries are there. There was one post on the forums about an issue - slow booting - which seemed to be related to /etc/hosts contents but the resolution was never posted. The general tendency seems to be that it *should* be possible but clearly there seems to be something about this particular family of distros which is very picky. Maybe it needs something that looks like a FQDN rather than a simple host name or some other exact setup. I certainly couldn't see anything that looked out of the ordinary in the file that gave the trouble. -- Ian Hotmail is for spammers. Real mail address is igoddard at nildram co uk

My database happens to be running on SuSE 10.x and I have SuSE 11.x on a different machine. I also have SuSE 9.x running on my 1U DNS/firewall server which is pretty slow and will be phased out down the road. (Its an old celeron box that I may upgrade in the near future with a new motherboard and cpu combo. ) _________________________________________________________________ Rediscover Hotmail®: Now available on your iPhone or BlackBerry http://windowslive.com/RediscoverHotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Rediscover_Mobile1_042009
