To elaborate further ...
Informix instances have their own:
o configuration file (onconfig.xxx)
o storage (chunks may not be shared between instances)
o master oninit daemon (when the instance is not off-line)
o backup and recovery procedures
o root dbspace
An instance is an environment, resources, configurations, processes, in
which databases live.
