I had a performance problem the first time I installed a 6 engine (didn't read the installation notes very well) - it was based on putting an incorrect value in the sqlhosts table. The value I used was "setlitcp" when it should've been "seipcpip". By using the former I was telling the engine to wander around the network to look for a server, rather than look on the local machine.
