ESQL/C & $set explain on problem

While I wait for Informix tech support to call me back, I thought that I would see if anyone on the net could help with this problem. In an ESQL/C program (ESQL version 4.10.UD2) running on an HP 9000/380, I am trying to do a '$set explain on' to watch the execution of the select statements following throughout the program. No errors come back, but I don't get a 'sqexplain.out' file anywhere that I can find either. Any suggestions?
