Switching connection method from shm to tcp

On this machine about 10% of all onchecks just hang. This may the ibm bug
161668 SHARED MEMORY CONNECTIONS HANG ON AIX POWER4 SYSTEMS
So specifically for the onchecks I want to switch the connection method to
TCP. I have:
sqlhosts:
duff onipcshm duff duff
duff_net onsoctcp duff duff_duff
onconfig:
DBSERVERALIASES duff_net
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,24,CPU
NETTYPE soctcp,1,24,NET
services:
duff_duff 8017/tcp # Informix server on duff
If I set the variable 'INFORMIXSERVER' to 'duff_net' prior to running
'oncheck', is that sufficient to ensure it uses the tcp protocol?
