IIUG IDS "non standard" says Tech Support
Posted in 2003
Andy Kent couldn't start the free IIUG "limited connection" copy of IDS 9.40.TC1. IBM Tech Support identified a fix but then refused, calling his build "non-standard" and possibly a defective beta, and told him to install a standard 9.40.TC1. Replies noted the trial version is unsupported except via tsmail@us.ibm.com (otherwise IIUG supports it), and IBM insiders (Pruet, Tang) confirmed the IIUG download is not beta but the GA code with added user/connection limits, which can cause problems if an app needs more sessions. No fix for Andy's startup failure is recorded.

I have a long-running case with IBM Tech Support over my attempts to get my IIUG copy of IDS 9.4 to start. Although they identified the problem and offered to supply a utility to fix it, now that they have seen the version number I have been told: "You seem to be running a non-standard copy of 9.40.TC1. I'm not sure where you would have got that from however it has been advised that you obtain a standard copy and install that." and "Since that isnt a standard 9.40.TC1 we cannot verify that it is free of defects and neither do we know if its a beta release as the name could have been changed from beta to evaluation. We know that the beta release did contain defects. Therefore we recommend you install a standard 9.40.TC1 otherwise we can only conclude that this product is unverified and therefore unreliable." Any suggestions anyone? Andy
Andy, Personally I would try getting the product that they recommend. Informix/IBM support would be obligated to take ownership of the issue and correct the problem... with a beta or nightly build you have little leverage to have the issue corrected unless the issue also reproduces on the GA release. -----Original Message----- From: ANDY KENT [mailto:andykent.bristol@virgin.net] Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2003 1:52 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: IIUG IDS "non standard" says Tech Support [1476] I have a long-running case with IBM Tech Support over my attempts to get my IIUG copy of IDS 9.4 to start. For the Limited Connection version of IDS 9.4 available from IIUG, the following should be in the release notes: Support: IBM does not provide program services or technical support to this trial and buy version. IBM service offerings are limited to the use of the IBM Informix tech support mail alias (tsmail@us.ibm.com). Inquries should include "9.40 Demo" in the subject line. All other support issues should be directed to the IIUG. Are you using the tsmail@us.ibm.com alias? > Are you using the tsmail@us.ibm.com alias? Yes. Sure, IBM would not be expected to support a Beta product. But what are IIUG doing offering a Beta (with, apparently, known defects) as a download? Clearly it ought to be replaced. Andy
The IIUG download is the GA with a bit of added code to enforce the restrictions of the freebie. It is not the Beta copy. That's not what Tech Support told me. They also said that the defects I was experiencing existed with the Beta but not with the GA. Andy
IIUG 9.40.UC1E1 is not a beta version. It is the same as GA 9.40.UC1 but with limitation on the number of concurrent users. Due to the nature of this limitation, you may have issues if your application requires more than allowed number of sessions.
