Re: NewEra: Application Framework - Any docs?

Perry, I agree that NewEra is closer to C++ than SmallTalk and I am not a purist, but pragmatic and practical. I did not mean to suggest that events have all the funtionality of a CORBA or DCE implementation, but it is a message passing mechanism much like RPC's and is a logical extension to the event-driven paradigmn of the GUI interface. In practical terms it allows for application partitioning and we will still be able to provide class libraries to DCE, CORBA and TP monitors as appropriate. In that respect it is a large-grained versus small-grained (ala SmallTalk) messaging facility. Not all applications will warrant the use or expense of DCE, CORBA or TP monitors and NewEra will provide an additional facility that is much easier than coding RPC's. Sounds practical to me. -- //////////////// Mark Sigler, Systems Engineer ////////// // Informix Software, Inc. ////// / /// 1000 West McNab Road ///// // //// Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33069 //// // ///// Voice: (305) 781-2646 /// // ////// Fax: (305) 781-2029 // // /////// Voicemail: (800) 688-4217 x 2147 / /////////// Email: MSigler@Informix.Com //////////////// WWWeb: HTTP://WWW.Informix.Com/ -- } } >>>>>>>>>> Perry's response to Mark Sigler <<<<<<<<<< } } Yes, Smalltalk is pure object oriented, but NewEra is not. Just } compare the number of applications written in C++ that are in } mainstream production to the number written and deployed in } Smalltalk, or Eiffel for that matter. I think you will have to } agree that C++ is faster, and more widely used than either of } these two. Why? Because it's a good practical, useful mix of } ideas taken from many languages including Smalltalk, Simula, C, } etc. NewEra is much closer to C++ than Smalltalk or other pure } OO languages. If you happen to be an OO purist then I can see } your point. I happen to think that practicality overrides purism } 99.9% of the time. Suggesting that people use only the 'event' } side of NewEra is, as I said, ridiculous. NewEra's events are } _not_ message passing facilities as you try to make them sound by } comparing to DCE and CORBA. If they were, Informix would not be } providing a NewEra class encapsulation of DCE functionality. } You miss out on the power of the language if all you use is } events. Think about polymorphism.
