Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A user on IDS 7.31 (Solaris) had a user table filling up rootdbs and couldn't add a new chunk, getting "Cannot add a new chunk to the DBspace / ISAM error: no free disk space"; deleting rows didn't help. Replies explained that if rootdbs' first chunk is completely full, no space can be added anywhere, and suggested freeing space first: unload and drop the table, add the chunk, then reload; move the table out with CREATE CLUSTER INDEX IN another dbspace or ALTER FRAGMENT ON TABLE ... INIT IN <other dbspace>; or drop and later recreate sysmaster from sysmaster.sql. The poster thanked the responders but didn't report which fix he used.

Hi,
I am currently having a table that is stored in rootdbs and it almost used up
all the available pages inside that space. So I decided to add a new chunk to
it but it was unsuccessful. The error given is:
Cannot add a new chunk to the DBspace.
ISAM error: no free disk space
Searched for this error and IBM is asking to call their technical support
-> http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21137687
So my question here is:
1) How can I resolve this without calling?
2) Any way I can free up the used chunk? Deleting records from the table
doesn't seem to help.
Hopefully someone can answer me. Thanks.
FYI, I am currently using IDS 7.31 in Solaris (intel)
Easiest way, unload data from a table and drop the table. This will free up
some space. Add a new chunk. Create the dropped table and load data.

There is a problem that, if the first chunk of rootdbs is completely
full, it is not possible to add more space (anywhere in the database).
If you have sufficient space elsewhere then you could recreate the
table there with a 'CREATE CLUSTER INDEX IN ' command. Alternativly
you could drop the sysmaster database, add the new chunk and then
recreate the sysmaster database using the sql script in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sysmaster.sql.

Thanks for the reply Keith.

If you have another dbspace with enough free space you can:
ALTER FRAGMENT ON TABLE <mytable> INIT IN <other dbspace>;
That will free up space in rootdbs where nothing should be residing except
system created databases anyway.
