I have dusted off a copy of 'INFORMIX Guide to SQL Reference' which is a December 1991 edition. On page 4-9 it describes DBFORMAT (so I was right :), which is set to 'front:thousands:decimal:back'. It is used to format DECIMAL, MONEY, FLOAT, SMALLFLOAT, INTEGER & SMALLINT. Both front & back are 1-7 chars for the currency. Both thousands & decimal are one or more (bit vague) characters used to separate the thousand and decimals respectivly. Strangely enough, on the next page it describes DBMONEY format as '[front][.|,][back]'. Again both front & back are 1-7 chars each.
