Map temp tables to session
Posted in 2012
A DBA on IDS 11.50.FC6X5 wanted to trace temp tables back to the session that created them: most implicit temp tables from Cognos reporting queries (subqueries, multisets) land in the DBSPACETEMP dbspaces, but some fill up rootdbs. Suggestions: use the find_temp_tbls script in the IIUG Software Repository to map temp tables to sessions; Art Kagel noted rootdbs temp tables usually mean logged temp tables and TEMPTAB_NOLOG should prevent this (the poster already had it set). Fernando Nunes pointed to APAR IC80136 as a possible match, advising the poster to identify the offending queries and open a PMR. No confirmed resolution is recorded.

Hello, We are running informix 11.50.FC6X5. Is there anyway to map temp tables back to the original session that created those tables? We have reporting users that don't use explicit temp tables (create temp table), though they do have many subqueries and multisets. Most of those "temp" tables end up in the dbspaces specified in the DBSPACETEMP tempdbs:tempdbs2:tempdbs3 onconfig parameter. However, there seems to be a few where the temp tables end up in the rootdbs. We are trying to find those queries. Thank You, Dave in4mixdba@gmail.com --e89a8f22c3818d0cdb04d1c54003

There is a script in the www.iiug.org <http://www.iiug.org> Software Repository
under Database Administration called find_temp_tbls.
It would be nice if this was added as an onstat option..hint hint.
Regards,
David.
Temp tables in rootdbs happen when users create logged temp tables. The solution for such tables created accidentally is to turn on TEMPTAB_NOLOG in the ONCONFIG file and bounce the engine making all temp tables unlogged unless they are explicitly placed in a logged dbspace (by adding an IN <dbspace> clause to the create temp table statement). Thank you David I will take a look at that script.

Art, Thank you. Though we have had "TEMPTAB_NOLOG 1" in the onconfig for a long time already. Also these are users are from cognos and they don't have a way of creating temp tables via cognos. Instead of temp tables, they very heavily use subqueries, multisets etc... I am trying to figure out which sql is causing these tables to be created in rootdbs. --Dave On Wed, Dec 26, 2012 at 2:17 PM, Art Kagel <art.kagel@gmail.com> wrote: > Temp tables in rootdbs happen when users create logged temp tables. Understood, but rather odd. Internally created temp tables should be following TEMPTAB_NOLOG and be created in a temp dbspace. I note that others have posted queries to get you the links you need to track down the culprits. Art Art S. Was the version mentioned?
In these cases, are your users able to complete the queries or do they just
abort with lack of space...?
It does ring a bell, but I'd have to look...

My email works... but I don't check it frequently...

Yes version mentioned is Informix 11.50.FC6X5. They are able to completed
the queries, though we monitor rootdbs and we can see it filling up rather
quickly.

This may be a very wild guess... But it's possible you're seeing this:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IC80136
After you identify the queries you may want to verify if they match the
conditions mentioned. If yes, you should open a PMR. IBM should be able to
provide you with a fix.
Regards.
