I was presented with the same problem at two different jobs that I worked at but Informix did something nice that saved the company money. I mean nice is that they were the ones that told be about this. You can get a development license for the 5 programmers and a runtime for the users. This works fine for both 4GL and Online. The thing is that we only have the runtime version of the engine running on the machine. For any questions that come up for tech support we just read off the serial number for the development copy. This method greatly reduced cost because the development was for a 1-16 user license and the runtime for all the users. I am guessing that you could implement the same scheme since Informix Reps from two different geographical areas told me the same thing and said it was OK to do it that way. (New Jersey, and Florida) I hope his helps you and Informix pricing is all that bad if you can implement something like this. But the thing that gets me is when ISQL is thrown in to use the menu stuff you have to double your engine license to handle that menu session that is going to sleep for most of the time. I guess now you know why I don't use the menu options for Informix. Any replies or responses can be made directly to me or you can just publically (sp?) embarass me, whichever you prefer.
