"Table Level Restore (TLR) is based on a normal backup/archive. Normal backups/archives are platform dependent, therefore TLR also is platform dependent." That is not what John Miller III said to me at the Atlanta conference! Table level restore can restore to remote instances as well. It is just doing inserts into the target instance!
"That is not what John Miller III said to me at the Atlanta conference!" In fact check presentation K03.pdf from the 2006 IIUG conference on the IIUG Website, page 5... "Data may be placed in the same version database or on a different database version with a different machine architecture" !!
I think there is a misunderstanding regarding what is meant by "platform
dependent". You have always been able to restore an archive to remote
instances provided they are the same hardware type and OS. That is what
they mean by being platform dependent.
But if you are doing Table-level-restore to a heterogeneous distributed
database then it is theoretically possible to do a Table-level RECOVERY to a
different platform. (I don't like the term table-level restore as it implies
it is a subset of normal restore, and I think we should all describe it as
table level recovery as that is in fact what is being done)

Hi,
probably I need to clarify my earlier e-mail.
The TLR takes data from a normal archive (done
with ontape or ON-Bar) and these things are
platform dependent.
A TLR extracts the data from such archives and
kind of "interprets" them. The data is then put into
some table by SQL means.
Now the data extraction and interpreting is the
platform dependent part of the process.
Inserting the data into a table is actually platform
independent.
Therefore the TLR needs to be executed on the
correct platform, i.e. where the archives were
produced. But it is possible to insert the data into
a remote table, like a distributed SQL statement
inserting data into a table of a different server
(on a different machine/architecture).
What I wanted to make clear is that it is not possible
to take an archive from one platform, copy it to
another platform and then do the whole TLR execution
on this different platform. To my best knowledge this will
not work. I don't want anyone to think that it is possible
to use old archives from a different platform (where the
IDS instance and/or machine are no longer available)
and use that to do TLR on the new platform. Such
thinking could end in great dispair sometime down
the road.

Martin
