As I recall, the primary reason was that we ran a 24x7 operation and could not afford to take the system down to archive it. Since it's been a while since I've been into an SE system this may not still be the case. I thought that was the reason they named it "On Line", tho' :) If you call a gain of (in our case) a couple of hours of uptime per day improving throughput then we did, and by a large margin. OTOH, if you're willing to invest the DBA time, you can gain a more conventional throughput increase by _tuning_ the application to better serve your individual needs. SE does not provide the "tunability" to take advantage of the things that OnLine does. The issue is never quite a simple as, say, brain surgery or rocket science (that's why we get the BIG bucks!) __________________________________________________________________ | Clem Akins Standard Disclaimers Apply | |Reynolds Metals Co, Alloys Plant "Climb High, Cave Deep!" | | Muscle Shoals, Alabama USA cwakins@leia.alloys.rmc.com | |________________________________________________________________|
