Ideal Front End - That is in the eye of the developer and the intended purpose? Are you writing for a thin client application?, Web-based Intranet/Internet, green screen? Art likes esql/c, Peter likes php and perl, I'm a 4GL junky but moving toward php and perl for web development. Others here are big java fans. Contact IBM and they will provide you with websphere if you wish. What's the application type? Environment, intended user audience. Hard to give any type of professional (if I can use that word with this group) recommendation without more information. Sorry to be punchy but after the guy posted to the informix list who wanted to replace MS Access and gave a list of databases to choose from but didn't even list an Informix DB... Short description of the databases you list... Online 5.2 - latest and greatest if you have a single CPU and don't need the extensibility of BLOBs SLOBs and user defined functions. VERY low maintenance - set it up and it runs.... SE 7.25 - cooked file system but extremely solid IDS 9.3 / 9.4 - latest and greatest - 9.4 drops 2 gig chunk limit - allows for up to 128 pedabyte (sp?) of data - BUY MORE DISK. All the latest toys - datablades, geospatial, udf, etc. You are right to be 'concerned' about what linux and version to install on - get it from IBM - in writing.
