In which books are you looking? My 7.22 CD-ROM documentation set yields
39 references to "update statistics." The fundamental concept of updating
statistics is discussed at length in several places there, from the SQL
Tutorial to the Administration Guide to the Performance Guide.
Carlton Doe's Informix-OnLine Dynamic Server Handbook has an entire section
on the topic, mentioning it in the table of contents and at least three
times in the index.
I counted six entries in the index of Informix Unleashed, and two in the
second edition of Liz Suto's Performance Tuning.
That's all the books I have in reach. (It is hard being on the road.)
This topic is covered to exhaustion in the Performance Tuning class, and
your question is answered in the System Administration class. Classes
such as those offered at the Informix University are the foundation of a
professional DBA's education. See the schedule at http://www.informix.com
and sign up for the basic ones today.
And we haven't even covered alternative media. A quick Excite web search
on "informix update statistics" brings several good sources of information.
