I would personally still recommend 4GL, because it's a lot more stable and there's a lot more expertise around (to answer questions, etc.) If you need client/server, GUI's and OO (which clearly you don't, if you've gotten so far with SQL), you'd probably be better off going to 4GL. Unfortunately, in the long-term (+- 5years?), I think Informix might be pushing everyone to New Era (just an opinion, folks!). So, if you're going to be there for ever, you might want to weigh up the potential migration cost and go straight to NE.
