sqlturbo zombies devouring CPU
Posted in 1998
I'm having trouble with runaway sqlturbo processes that consume 100% of
CPU capacity, bringing our system to a virtual halt. We are running
Informix OnLine and I-STAR (both latest versions 5.10.UC1) on a Compaq
Proliant 3000 with SCO Openserver 5.0.4 with 504c update. Our clients
are all Windoze 95 boxes with NewError 2.11.
By way of background, cron is running a nightly script as part of my
overall backup strategy. There have been three lethal bugs discovered
in the tbtape archive utility, the last only a few months ago, so it
can't be trusted as the sole backup system. This script shuts down the
engine (necessary so dbexport can lock the database in exclusive mode),
restarts the engine, runs dbexport and copies the output files to tape
as follows:
INFORMIXDIR=/usr/informix;PATH=$PATH:/usr/informix/bin
export PATH INFORMIXDIRcd /usr/informix
tbmode -ky
sleep 10
tbinit
sleep 10
rm -rf /usr/informix/ccms.exp
dbexport ccms
tar cv8 /usr/informix/ccms.exp
This is not a 24 hour system, but some users leave their Informix
application running when they leave for the day. The engine does not
appear to be cleaning up all the user's sqlturbo processes and they are
sometimes left in a runaway state consuming all available CPU capacity.
Also, I believe in some cases that these zombies are orphaned due to
Windoze crashes, which happen as frequently as Bill Gates can't
remember. Of course, I clear them up after checking the process state,
with kill -9.
It would be helpful to understand why the engine is not terminating all
sqlturbo processes. Absent that, I thought I'd add to my script a method
to kill off any sqlturbo processes after the engine is shut down. Has
anyone experienced a similar problem and/or have any advice? Thank you
for your consideration.
