Performance of Informix Client/Server

We are experiencing a very big (~ 3 times) difference between running an Informix client on a separate Unix (AIX) box from the Informix server. The network is not busy and we don't see any collisions. When the client is running on the server machine everything looks great. Any suggestions ???
