In fact I'd recommendit. Think of telling a support person to enter AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD rather than A name. Plus you can change the dns entry easier than the ip address on hundreds of pcs. > For "services" you could use a services number rather than a service name, > which does not require an entry in "services". > > >My next discovery was that there also had to be an entry for > >my machine in the /etc/hosts.equiv file on the UNIX box. > > I've no solution for this one, but it's on the host and so, I guess, is > less of an issue. > NO!!!! Its a big issue. Hosts equiv esenstially tells your UNIX server that the machine in this file is a peer and can be trusted. It's a security hole but not as big as rhosts. Root controls this file and root is not trusted.... Plus, if you want to use DHCP, you can't. THis is one of the issues that I have not yet heard of a response from Informix. Informix has yet to realize the importance of connectivity in a client/server architecture. > Cheers, > Kerry S Just a few perverse thoughts on the issue. -Uncle Mikey (4 nephews 1 niece and growing)
