Slim it may be, but I have heard first hand experiences of multiple disk failures with relatively new installs in the last 12 months. At least 1 was RAID 5 and was trashed. With most of these systems the saving on disks is relatively small compared to the overall cost and reduced complication. I really enjoyed a conversation with a SAN/NAS salesman recently telling me that RAID 4 with DOUBLE parity disks was 10,000 time safer than RAID 10. The final selling point was Oracle have terabytes of this stuff. Yeah, that really convinced me. > I've heard histories that people didn't notice that the first > disk went bad for weeks until the second one went under . > I've heard stories of people complaining of raid-5 > performance was bad only to find out later that the > write-back cache was never turned on in the first place. > Blame the people not the technology. Or the salesmen who are selling snake oil to differentiate their product and DO NOT understand the full consequences. c01in Bull _______________________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned for all known viruses by the MessageLabs Email Security System. _______________________________________________________________________ sending to informix-list
