Copying from one server to another
Posted in 2013
User copied a 200GB Informix environment via network (ontape -s piped to ontape_restore) between HP-UX servers. After restore, Fast Recovery Mode ran for hours; rebooting caused shared memory initialization failure. Art Kagel advised running 'onmode -m' and waiting for the online message before shutdown/reboot, rather than interrupting Fast Recovery Mode prematurely.

I recently copied my Informix environment from one server to another using
information provided by John Miller below. Thanks John and others for the
information.
ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO -F | rsh server2 ontape_restore.ksh
I had to modify some environment variables to get it to work but the archive
completed to the other server. After an hour in Fast Recovery Mode on the
target server, I rebooted and could not get Informix to come online. It would
pass the validation of chunks but then fail with an error of oninit: Fatal
error in shared memory initialization. When I did some research I saw some
postings about interrupting Fast Recovery mode. So I did another restore and
it completed and now the target server is in Fast Recovery mode again and has
been for several hours. How can I tell if it is still doing something? I'll
give more information below.
Both servers running HPUX 11iv3 and Informix Dynamic Server 11.70.FC4.
Production source server is HP Integrity Blade and target server is a slower
HP Integrity RX 2600 server. We've restored to the RX 2600 target server many
times with HPUX Ignite process and Informix tapes using ontape -r. This is the
first time using the network instead of tape.
Other information:
* The entire backup / restore process took about 9 hours. I have at least 4
dbspaces with several 30 to 40GB databases. Probably a total of about 200GB of
databases.
* All databases are Unbuffered logging on our production server.
* On target server all file systems, chunks, dbspaces are the same size.
Since the entire backup / restore process took 9 hours, I'm wondering if Fast
Recovery will take that much or longer. Below is the output from onstat -p on
target server.

Thanks Art! That worked. It took about 10 minutes after the onmode -m to come
online.
In the future is there sometime after the restore that I have to wait to run
the onmode -m when in Fast Recovery mode, or can I run it right away?

You can run the onmode -m immediate after the ontape/onbar restore
completes (or after restoring any logical logs you need to restore). You
must bring the engine to full online mode (with the onmode -m) before
shutting down or it will not restart because all of the chunks will be
marked "Inconsistent" (Flag 'I' in the onstat -d report) because "fast
recovery" was not completed by bringing it online.
