Disconnecting from sqlturbo process.

We have an esql/c program that needs to gather information from an informix online (5.02) database, and then disconnect from the database and fork a child process. This all works fine, but it leaves behind an sqlturbo process with a ppid of one. I assume that this process is still attached to shared memory. Is there a way to disconnect from shared memory prior to forking, in order to not have this process hanging around? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
