ULIMIT Parameter

Hi, How can we set / modify the value of ulimit (System Parameter) in Sun OS ? Addition to this, what is the purpose of this parameter ? We are using IDS 11.50.FC6 on SUN SPARC. Thanks.

Ulimit is a utility to control several OS limits on the amount of resources that a user can acquire. Mostly when one speaks of "the ulimit" one is referring to the maximum file size that a user can create which is managed by "ulimit -f <size>". However, only root can increase a ulimit from its current setting, non-root users can only decrease their own ulimit settings. See this link, which is referring to the Linux ulimit, but almost all UNIX-like OSes are the same in this utility: http://ss64.com/bash/ulimit.html And this link about adjusting the system-wide limits that effect all uses: http://serverfault.com/questions/21417/how-to-set-ulimits-in-solaris-10 You can also use the ulimit utility in /etc/profile to raise the ulimit settings for various limits since it is run before control of a new session is handed over to the user who is logging in /etc/profile is executed with root privileges. When you raise critical limits, like memory and number of child sessions, you should do so only for those user ids that require the increase to prevent other users from hogging resources. Art Art S.
