They're also slow. Mercifully, the 7.30 servers support some of these functions as standard -- UPPER, LOWER, SUBSTR in particular. Long overdue! What you've provided will be useful until the engine provides them as standard -- which will probably be the 9.20 release of IDS/UDO, though that is a *guess* which I have not checked at all.
