OK. Problem resolved. Turned out there were several bogus entries in the /etc/hosts file that had the "pineb" host name that should have been only associated with the ip address of the local machine. Also, I had to add the local machine's host name to the /etc/hosts.equiv file. Thanks, JL, and everyone!
