ONSTAT -U Question
Posted in 2007
Question: what do the "total" and "maximum concurrent" figures on the last line of onstat -u mean, and do they relate to NETTYPE limits (the poster connected more sessions than the 128 'total' shown)? Answers: 'active' is current threads (a PDQ session can hold several), 'maximum concurrent' is the peak simultaneous count since startup, and 'total' is just the currently allocated user-thread structures, grown in 128-user chunks (a leftover of the old USERS onconfig parameter) — not a limit. NETTYPE only presizes structures and isn't a hard cap for TCP/pipe connections, though Art Kagel noted it is a hard limit for ipcshm since those segments/semaphores are built at startup. Also noted: licensing/concurrent-user limits aren't enforced or reported by the engine; compliance is the customer's responsibility.

Hi guys,
I got a old question, at least "old" for me. The last line of onstat-u output
show something like that
13 active, 128 total, 25 maximum concurrent
I got NETTYPE setting to
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,5,CPU # Configure poll thread(s) for nettypeNETTYPE
soctcp,1,5,NET # Configure poll thread(s) for nettypeDoes anybody here knows what "total" and "concurrent" columns means against to
NETTYPE configuration? I believed that total should be the MAX number of
connections alowed by Informix, but I tried and I could connect more sessions
than 128 (in case, NETTYPE was ipcshm,1,150,CPU soctcp,1,150,NET).
Anybody ?
Thanks,
André Luiz

'onstat -u' shows all threads for all sessions. If a session is using multiple
threads (PDQ) it will have multiple entries in 'onstat -u'

The NETTYPE parameter preconfigures IDS memory structures to support
a defined number of connections of a specific type. It does not,
however, limit the number of possible connections. I don't believe
there is a way to do that through the configuration file.
When the number of connections exceeds the number of connections
defined by NETTYPE, IDS builds more structures to support those
connections so there will be a small (very, very small) performance
hit. IDS will not automatically spawn more VPs to support those
connections.

Ok, So you guys are telling me that "concurrent" column is the maximum number of userthreads that one day (since startup) was connected at the same time on IDS SERVER. How could I know if the number of user concurrent agree with legal contract ? Is there a way to see it ? Christine, that's true for TCP and STRPIP connections, but for SHM connections,
the NETTYPE does actually create a hard limit since the number of shared memory
communications segments and semaphores for shared memory connections are
created
at startup and the engine will NOT create more on the fly.

Art,
I either have a misunderstanding about this last line, or perhaps maybe you
Art.
As for "active", and "maximum concurrent" we agree. For the original poster
"concurrent" means "at the same time" therefore at some point, from the time
the engine was brought up, there was a period where 25 "users" were connected
at once.
If you go back to older engines (I believe 5 was the last engine to have an
onconfig parameter for the number of USERS) The maximum in this last line was
the actual limit that you set in the onconfig file and it dictated the size of
certain memory blocks used to control connections. In one of the later engines
(I think the 7 engines) the maximum users (from onconfig USERS) was removed
and the engine began allocating memory when required to handle the users it
had up to the next logical limit. The limits are on a base 128 user boundary.
When first brought up the total is listed as 128 and if you venture beyond 128
users it bounces to 256, 384 and so forth.
As the maximum is really an artifact of an earlier engine it is not as useful
as it could be. Your limits are really in NETTYPE (and even those are not hard
limits, the engine can and will surpass the number of connections per thread
(poll and listen) I have no idea by how much, but you can add more VP for one
of the classes (for certain NET or SOC) to get more poll and listen thread
online.
George.

There is no way to match what the engine tracks today to the license
agreement. That is, licensing is NOT programatically enforced. To
my knowledge it never has been. It certainly has not been since the
acquisition. At the time of the acquisition, there was considerable
confusion about what "concurrent session" meant to the engine and how
Informix defined concurrent session in their license agreement. Each
IBM iteration of license has sought to get a clearer, more trackable
definition of concurrent session, however, it is still very unclear,
inside IBM, outside IBM and within IBM's compliance team.
To protect yourself, use CPU pricing when feasible and READ the
license agreement associated with the SPECIFIC version of IDS.
Minimum licensing requirements change and there are nuances in the
definition of C/S. Up to version 10.0, the logic behind these
changes was to try and get back as close to the Informix definition
of C/S (legal, not programatic) as possible.

George, I believe you are correct, the 'total' is the currently
configured/allocated resources for connections, not the total connections since
startup as I stated. I''m going to claim that it's a "Long week" and I'm on the
home stretch. You can tell how many connections you've had since startup by
connecting and looking at your session id for the new connection.
