Changing OnLine mode during restore...
Posted in 1997
...I know, I know, it was an accident, OK!! This morning I came in to work and restored OnLine onto our test machine (a routine operation following a level 0 archive on our production machine). Just after I took OnLine offline and started the restore, my bos (who didn't know I had arrived and started the restore) tried to access some data on the test machine, realised it was offline, and brought it online :-(. The restore appeared to complete OK, except for an error message when it tried to initialise at the end (it was already online). BUT, it aint working - the log file is full of "Failed Consistency Check" messages, and queries fail (it would appear that syscolumns is corrupted). I'm now doing the restore again (and I've modified our start up script so that it fails if tbtape or tbmonitor are running!), so that should be OK, but here is my question: If the OnLine system is offline and being restored, shouldn't OnLine stop anyone from bringing the system online until the restore has finished? Is this a particular problem with our version (see .sig for details) ? Am I just being dense? TIA Richard.
