Re: Is Mirroring w/RAID 5 overkill?

Hello-- I will shortly be installing ODS 7.2 on a sun sparc ultra with a sun storage array raid system using the veritas volume manager. I have six equal sized drives in the array. I intend to have volume management make two virtual drives (two "volumes", each a three-drive plex), and then let ODS mirror the databases between the two virtual drives. I wish to know if I should use volume management to stripe data across each of the three-drive plexes, concatenate the plexes, or does it make more sense to hand informix the six drives independantly? if I stripe them, how wide do I want the stripes? (ie, how many kbytes should be written to a given disk before continuing to the next; typically small stripe sizes are bad for random access, unless stripe size and I/O request size are equal, sun recommends using 64k or the size of one track; my tracks happen to be 64k) --any assistance appreciated --andrew k bressen bressen@leftbank.com
