Informix 7.31 (Alpha Unix TRUE64) hangs in "Alloca
Posted in 2009
A user trying to restore an old Informix 7.31 backup on an Alpha Tru64 box found that 'oninit -vi' hung at "Allocating and attaching to shared memory...", with no online.log created and the process left spinning in the background. Respondents suggested checking whether the build was for Tru64 vs DEC OSF, fixing the preceding "Creating /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs ... FAILED" permission problem, verifying oninit's setuid bit and the installation, confirming the OS matches the original (needed for restore), and tuning kernel shared memory/semaphore settings in /etc/sysconfigtab (checking ipcs -a). No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hi List. I need to recover and OLD backup made in Informix 7.31 for
Alpha. I get an old server and install Informix 7.31. Bu it cant get it
running. When I try to initialize the server it hangs "Allocating and
attaching to shared memory...". I think it could be some Operative
System issue. But I really never use Unix TRU64 in the past.
There is no online.log. The server doesnt create it.
Any idea?
Thanks and Regards

not TRUE64!

You can start by checking the permissions on INFORMIXTMP, the database
engine needs to be able to write there. You also should check and make
sure that the OS is the same as the old one. Even if you can get the
7.31 engine going on this system, if the OS is different, you won't be
able to do your restore.

Did you setup the /etc/sysconfigtab file?
That's the file where you setuo semaphores, shmmax etc....
Please check your IDS release notes for some example values...
You can also check with ipcs -a to see if it has allocated any memory
segments...
Regards.

Ooops... didn't notice this one...
Are you sure your IDS installation is ok? Does oninit have the setuid
permission set?

Hello Art,
I've been using the majority of the latest 10 years working on several hosts
with several IDS versions on Tru64 (not TruE).
Yes, it's supported (still is) although we didn't release 11.x for it due to
the fact that the OS is deprecated.
It was a very stable OS... I rarely hit any bugs on the OS... and one of
them was very "entertaining"... I'll probably miss it, although it was a bit
awkward at times...
Regards.
