Archive fills one dbspace: key processes fail to use an alternate

IDS 9.40 FC3W2 on HP-UX 11.11: We had a problem last week where an onbar process failed to die nicely and eventually, unnoticed, filled up one of the instance's 4 temporary dbspaces. This caused several critical processes to fail. I understand why the dbspace filled, but not why the processes could not have used one of the 3, empty, alternative dbspaces.
