NEED INFO: AS400 & Informix
Posted in 1995
Our organization is currently faced with a major dilemma. We would like to move our data-processing to a Unix based Informix client/server platform, but there is already a vested interest in AS400 technology. IBM would like to sell us an "Advnaced Series AS400", and use their own client/server software. Our preference is for the Informix solution. We are a widely distributed organization, with a wide variety of network platforms, including Unix, Netware, and Windows NT. We have many distributed databases that need to be coordinated for centralized reporting. Some sites are connected by 56KB lines for TCP/IP communications. Our primary application already exists in Informix as well. This probably sounds like a "no brainer", but there are those that are in the AS400 "camp" that would rather redevelop the application from scratch on the AS400. I don't believe that the Advanced Server AS400 will be as flexible given our multi-platform environment. IBM is coming out here in a few weeks to convince us to go AS400. Does anyone out there have any competitive literature, experiences, technical information that would support the Unix-based Informix solution over the AS400 Advanced Server client/server solution? Thanks in advance! Richard rmark@execpc.com
