RE: what is the future for NEWERA product?

Richard, According to the product lifecycle on the Informix website, Newera is in Category 3 - limited maintenance. It will be moved to Category 4 on 31 Dec 2001. I have heard many reports of Newera working successfully with SP5. Newera is a great, if unfinished, product. Combined with the NEWT class library, it becomes a very good alternative to the horrors of VB, PB or even Delphi. Choosing a tool is a task fraught with difficulty - who can say that Sybase won't treat PB the way Informix have treated Newera, or that Inprise/Borland won't fold. At least with Newera we can be sure that there's another two years of support! NO Newera is in maintenance 4 mode and will be unsupported after 31 December 2000. There are concerns about Newera on NT being Y2K compliant when it is only certified for NT 4.0 SP3. SP3 is not Y2K compliant. Richard yupu yang <yyp@www.dlpec.com> wrote in message news:7k4gis$fvl$1@news.xmission.com... > > someone maybe tell me if I should use NEWERA in the future. >

I might agree with the VB or Delphi bit, but perhaps you could tell me what "horrors" there are w/ PowerBuilder???? allen
Ciaran, Sorry to get the facts wrong. We had an Informix rep here last week and he put the category 4 in my head. In addition, Support here in Australia actually gave me another end date for support as 31 December 1999 !!!!. Anyway, why would you use a product with such a limited lifespan ? I have not tried Newera under SP4 or SP5. I was advised that it is unsupported. ie if I had a problem then I would have to also prove it to be a problem under SP3 -- How many machines do they think I have ? BTW: I have discovered Newera is fine under Visual Studio 6, but there again it is unsupported. If you are using the dch NEWT toolkit (great isn't it ? what would you do without it ?), then it requires some minor changes due to some more stringent compiler checking under C++ 6.
