Performance Issues with I-Star and I-Net

We are facing a performance problem with Informix client-server environment. A set of inserts when performed from the same machine on which Informix OnLine is running takes about 3 Secs. but the same operation when performed on a client machine takes about 9 Secs. This test was done during off hours when no other users were logged on to either of the machines and there was no substantial network traffic. The application is written in 4gen, uses I-Net at the client end and I-Star at the server end. The version of Informix-Online is 4.0x. I am trying to find out where the problem lies. Unfortunately, none of the Informix manuals (For version 4.0) talk about performance tuning in client-server environment.
