I'm not sure what the problem is. You have to be physically present at
the tape drive to swap the tape so why not wait until the light goes
out?
You mention that the backup runs "in the background". Doea this mean
that you are using the "continuous" backup mode? If so, kill the backup
before starting the archive. This will write the current log to the
tape. When this has been completed you can change to the archive tape
and then restart log backups after the archive has finished. The only
requirement is that you should have sufficient logical log space to
ensure that it won't fill up whilst your archive is running.
