This isn't allways bad. There are several things that can be implemented at this level like security, compression, buffering and the like that isn't commonly awailable (or well implemented at least) within the database server and it's native protocol used by a type 4 driver. > he doesn't want to be tied to the db, but >he's now just tied to the middleware instead, which sometimes is good and >sometimes is bad. Using JDBC you are only tied to the vendor (db and/or middleware) to the extent that you use features that are not available in other JDBC drivers. You can however easily get tied to the db vendor whatever JDBC driver you use by utilizing SQL that is spesific to that database. If you are after performance this is all too easy to do and sometimes hardly possible to avoid. > i'd LOVE for informix to have their own type-4 jdbc >driver, but that company is just a little too screwed up, poor support, poor >products, lame documentation, bla bla bla. weblogic is your best bet, when >they're finished. What I would want to see is a complete rethinking of all connectivity issues from Informix. They should possibly have some external company redo their connectivity solutions to both become much simpler to set up and use, but primarily have a substantially higher level of security build in (as extensions to the different standards that are implemented). It seems to be too hard for most database vendors to do this for themselves, particularly as those who do the work on this now mostly have to work without a direct revenue streem to the database vendor they can point to as a result of their good work. It's allways hard to work within a development organization under such circumstances.
