Just saw an interesting IBM presentation today at the Field Museum in Chicago.

If anyone dares to say that IDS is being sold and presented as an IBM database, they are full of shite. Literally IBM presented a blue stack picture and the *only* time Informix was mentioned was in talking about where IBM got some of their great new technology found in the latest release of DB2. (Pure scale?) Also when talking about Column oriented databases ... nothing in IDS... but in DB2. So IDS... really out of the picture?

(Actually just north of Soldier Field) Not the fact that IBM is publicly putting a face on DB2, and ignoring IDS. So one has to ask of those that put their faith in anything IBM says... how do you feel now? Note to Jerry K. You're a much better speaker than your DB2 counterpart. -G

Well I wouldn't put it that way. Maybe some sort of vindication for those who have been warning about this while others have had their head in the ground and in denial. The point is that you can't deny this and you can't say that you didn't see this coming. DB2, even with code borrowed from IDS still isn't IDS. So looking at this... If you're a stalwart IDS user, I guess you'll continue to use IDS for legacy applications, but which database will you choose going forward. Or rather which database would your CIO choose? The whole Hadoop world scares IBM. You can see this with their 'columnar' data types glued on. Along with their XML data types glued on. IDS would be a better fit. But on the high end where you don't need ACID, you go with HBase if you have a Hadoop Cluster. There's Voldemort and Cassandra but they don't have the critical mass nor tie in to Hadoop as well. So your database/data warehouse where you need ACID and then your paid for analytic tools still becomes a sink. (Thats an electrical engineering term) There were a lot of subtle messages being said and unfortunately those speaking, even their paid 'independent' analyst who's not really that 'independent' or that good of an analyst, just a paid mouthpiece willing to shill out for the highest bidder, all just don't get it. Informix is going in to life support mode like IMS. Oh yes, IBM still supports IMS even though they've convinced their mainframe customers to convert to DB2. Looks like Keesee et al are just riding things out until retirement. Sorry Jerry, but I was hoping you would have popped in for the trip. Incidently your counterpart was introduced as a Director of databases and there was no mention of DB2 until they started talking about their blue stack. Sure it was a ho hum story, except that it confirms everything we've known. Now there's no excuse for putting your head in the sand. Special shout out to IBM. If you think your customers who are on Informix... will migrate to DB2, you are sadly mistaken. Learn your lesson from that SAP debacle of Janet's. On a side note... I heard rumors that S&D (Sales and Distribution) are in a bit of a disarray. (At least in the US.) If you're a shareholder. You may want to think about selling or start taking a defensive strategy. IBM sells in to a specific crowd and when their customers have to cut costs they will look elsewhere if only to force IBM to sell at a discount to J level. (meaning sell at a loss to make it up in services or elsewhere.) But hey! What do I know? Did I used to work for IBM? Yup 'fraid so. Do I pay attention to these events? Yup, guilty as charged. So I guess I know enough to say that IDS is a sinking ship and as DBAs your days are numbers. Maybe Art can ride it out until retirement, but many can't. Sorry. -G
