Not sure where to post this question so chose here. Should you be paying a license fee for unsupported informix version i.e 9.4

Generally speaking, you only pay for the license once, so it's perpetual. What you're paying for on a yearly basis is support and maintenance. If you're on an unsupported version, then you're obviously not getting the former. It does, however, give you the option of moving to a supported release and be entitled to all associated fixes. If you drop maintenance and decide you want to upgrade IDS later, you'll be paying a premium (essentially, buying the licenses again) to get back on the program. You can get extended support for 9.40, if that is the question. It is non-defect support, ie they will help you with problems (bring the server up if there are problems after a crash etc.) but only get you patchs that are already available (so if you have say 9.40.xC4 and there is a fix to a bug you hit in .xC8 they will send you xC8 or a later already available release, but they won't fix a bug for you for which a fix isn't already available).
