NT: -expensive - unless you get a copy from someone who paid for it -sole-source OS - Only Microsoft provides it -undocumented - OS is proprietary and most of it is undocumented -unpredictable - progression and maturity of the OS is uncertain, and unpredictable Linux: -FREE -compatible UNIX - works like, is like, most UNIXes -multi-source - Value comes from not only the OS, Linux, but other versions of UNIX Investments in learning/using commercial UNIX can be directly applied to Linux. Linux is available for installation from several sources. -documented - source code and plenty of UNIX manuals and UNIX training available from a myriad of providers -predictable - stable releases are available, and the connectivity with other UNIXes is seamless, using TCP/IP. As far as the WWW tools, you can get Apache for FREE, which now has API support for third party products. This of course depends on market demand like anything else. There are a couple of others out there as well. Head over to the Linux pages out there, and tell me you can't set up a Linux site for FREE--needing only the hardware and the net connection. For the most part, if your web site does not need a data base, you can use Linux end-to-end for NO COST other than the ISP connection and cheap hardware to set it up. There are a few data base products out there that <ARE> available, but their cost is actually quite affordable, i.e. empress or applix, etc... BTW, I hear Active X Sloth is being discontinued. So much for "LONG LIVE NT". Even though I have an NT system, it's not because I think it's great, but because I have to deal with market realities. If and when Linux catches on here in the US and I can find a real data base product for it, NT will be erased so fast from my hard drive it won't be funny. :-) I can't hardly wait for NT to go away... :-) -- Tim Schaefer \\\\|// tschaefe@mindspring.com (6 6) ------------------------oOOo---( )---o00o--------- http://www.inxutil.com
