I didn't use esql but stuck with the preprocess-compile, two-step process instead because we like to keep the makefile as portable as possible since other RDBMS may not support this one-shot approach. But the response above did point me to the right direction. After taking a look of the esql script I realized the sequence of libraries should be "libsql.a libgen.a libos.a." And all is well now.
